Season 2, Episode 13 – Our Top Rides at Disneyland and California Adventure Park!

Our Top Rides at Disneyland and California Adventure Park!

Hey everyone, I’m Mike, she’s Sophie, and that’s Brenda, and we’re On the Road with Mickey! This is Season 2, Episode 13 for March 29, 2021, and our feature topic today is Our Top Rides at Disneyland and California Adventure Park! We’re concluding our talk about our favorite rides with a look at the west coast and the OG Disneyland Park as well as Disney’s California Adventure Park! We hope this triggers discussion in your family about your top rides, and that you let us know what they are! Grab a drink, relax, and join us as we talk about all the things that we came up with! Here’s our rundown of what we talked about:

  • Cheddar from the Big Cheese
    • Mike: Last week we talked about Soarin’ Over California vs. Soarin’ Around the World, and which one people liked more. The original poll was 52% – 48% for Soarin’ Around the World, but then we did a poll last week and Soarin’ Over California won 67% – 33%!
    • Sophie: From the Disney Parks Blog: “We’re revealing the first-ever Walt Disney World Resort specialty license plate today in honor of “The World’s Most Magical Celebration,” beginning on Oct. 1, 2021. Supporting the local community, 100% of the proceeds will benefit Make-A-Wish Central and Northern Florida.
    • Brenda: As part of the small refurbishment projects that Walt Disney World is doing in order to get ready for the 50th Anniversary, the Main Street Confectionary and The Chapeau will be closing on March 29. We’re not sure how long the refurbishment will last, but it is showing closed at least through May 24th. While they are closed, the offerings that you would normally buy at these locations will be available at other places on Main Street.
    • Mike: Wow, Spring Break has arrived at Disney! The park availability calendar shows that nearly all of the parks are completely booked as far as Park Pass reservations go. It varies as to what days have what availability to if you are looking to make park reservations, make sure you check the availability before you purchase your tickets!
    • Sophie: If you are going to be at Disney around the Easter holiday, there are several locations where you can view the Easter Displays. The dates vary, so check the show notes, but you can find them at the Boardwalk Resort, the Grand Floridian, Saratoga Springs Resort, and over at the Yacht and Beach Club resorts.
      • Disney’s Boardwalk Resort – Lobby area (available for viewing Mar. 26-April 4)
      • Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa – Lobby area, concierge level, and Grand Floridian Café lobby (available for viewing Mar. 15-April 4)
      • Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort – Carriage House (available for viewing Apr. 1-11)
      • Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resort – Beach Club lobby, Yacht Club lobby, Ale & Compass Restaurant, The Market at Ale & Compass (available for viewing Mar. 18-Apr. 4)
    • Mike: We are sad to report that Disney Legend Jim Cora passed away on March 21st at the age of 83. Mr. Cora started his Disney career at Disneyland in 1957 as a part-time attractions host polishing 3D glasses at the Mickey Mouse Club Theater, and retired 43 years later as chairman of Disney International. He credited his rise through Disney to the boss, Walt Disney, who sent him over to Disney University founder Van Arsdale France with the admonition: “Tell him Walt sent you. I think he may have something for you.” Josh D’Amaro had this to say in a statement: “Very few people have a Disney legacy that reaches as far and wide as Jim Cora. His dedication to bringing Disney magic to people around the world was only matched by the passion he exuded throughout his career and for the many years that followed. I always loved hearing Jim’s thoughts about our business. He was one of our last connections to Walt Disney and he will be missed dearly.”
    • Brenda: Yay! Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure Park are reopening on April 30! Currently, they are only opening for California residents, but this is such great news! Disneyland is also working on DisneylandForward, which is a large expansion project.

Our Top Rides at Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom!

Hey everyone, I’m Mike, she’s Sophie, and that’s Brenda, and We’re on the Road with Mickey! This is Season 2, Episode 11 for March 15, 2021, and our feature topic today is Our Top Rides at Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom! We hope this triggers discussion in your family about your top rides, and that you let us know what they are! Grab a drink, relax, and join us as we talk about all the things that we came up with! Here’s our rundown of what we talked about:

  • Cheddar from the Big Cheese
    • Mike: Statement from Bob Chapek, CEO of The Walt Disney Company regarding Disneyland reopening: “Here in California, we’re encouraged by the positive trends we’re seeing and we’re hopeful they’ll continue to improve and we’ll be able to reopen our Parks to guests with limited capacity by late April — we look forward to publicizing an opening date in the coming weeks. While last week’s announcement stated that theme parks may open starting on April 1, the fact is it will take some time to get them ready for our guests — this includes recalling more than 10,000 furloughed Cast and retraining them to be able to operate according to the State of California’s new requirements. I am pleased to say the response has been great thus far, our Cast Members are excited to get back to work. And this is also good news for the Anaheim community, which depends on Disneyland for jobs and business generated by visitors.”
    • Sophie: Raya and the Last Dragon premiered in theaters and on Disney+ on the 5th, and it took home the top spot in the earnings charts!
    • Brenda: Coming October 1st, in addition to the Walt Disney World 50th Anniversary: Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure at the France Pavilion in EPCOT! Also opening in France that day: La Crêperie de Paris, which is a new restaurant featuring both table and quick-service options!
    • Mike: Additional news out of the Disney Annual Shareholders Meeting — Bob Iger announces that he will be stepping down from the Walt Disney Company on December 31, 2021.
    • Sophie: In Covid news: Disney Cruise Lines is hoping and expecting to resume sailings in the fall! That’s huge news since the cruise industry has been shut down pretty much since March 2020.

Season 2, Episode 10 – WDW 50th Anniversary Changes

WDW 50th Anniversary Changes

Hey everyone, I’m Mike, she’s Sophie, and that’s Brenda, and We’re on the Road with Mickey! This is Season 2, Episode 10 for March 8, 2021, and our feature topic today is the WDW 50th Anniversary Changes! This week, we’re talking about some of the changes that we can expect to see in time for the 50th Anniversary of Walt Disney World! We hope that this gets you excited about a possible trip to Walt Disney World for the 50th Anniversary! Grab a drink, relax, and join us as we talk about all the things that we came up with! Here’s our rundown of what we talked about:

  • Cheddar from the Big Cheese
    • Mike: Over at Disneyland, on March 13th there is going to be a “Reopen Disneyland” rally. It will start at 8AM outside of the Disneyland Resort. Safety guidelines to be followed include masks on at all times, six feet social distancing, and sanitizing your hands frequently.
    • Sophie: As we reported back on December 28th in our podcast “Looking ahead to 2021”, Blizzard Beach reopened yesterday, March 7th! Looking at the website, one day tickets for Blizzard Beach run just $69 dollars, so if you are interested, the pricing isn’t terrible for a day of water park fun! Blizzard Beach was open yesterday from 11AM – 6PM.
    • Brenda: Over on Instagram, Zach Ridley shared a video and some images of the nighttime lighting for the Main Entrance Plaza for Epcot, including imagery of Spaceship Earth. It is so cool looking, check it out! https://www.instagram.com/p/CL-jVVKhajk/
    • Sophie: The Flower and Garden Festival started last week on March 3rd, and there is some really awesome merch to go with it! It looks like there are four five main themes to the merchandise:
      • Hello Sunshine featuring the Orange Bird
      • Grow Imagination featuring Figment
      • Grow Kindness featuring Minnie Mouse
      • Can You Dig It featuring Mickey
      • Cool as Can Bee featuring Spike the Bee.
    • Mike: As part of the Flower and Garden Festival, the Egg-stravaganza Scavenger Hunt is returning to Epcot starting on March 19th! Purchase a map for $7.99 plus tax, then hunt for hidden eggs featuring Disney characters. When you find them all, return the map for a “sp-egg-tacular surprise!”
    • Brenda: Lastly, over at the Imagination Pavilion you can find creatively placed fountains. They are known as the “Jumping Fountains” because they jump from one to another periodically. Well, since the closure in March 2020, they have not been working — until last week! This is a small detail, and easily overlooked, but if you are looking for a place to just relax for a bit, this little section might be just the spot for you!

  • Feature Topic: WDW 50th Anniversary Changes
    • When is the Anniversary
      • October 1st, 2021 is the 50th anniversary of the opening of Walt Disney World with the first park, the Magic Kingdom.
      • Disney has announced that the celebration of the 50th Anniversary will start on October 1st, and continue for 18 months. This is big news because it means that the celebration will continue for a good while so that those that can’t get to Walt Disney World right now will still have an opportunity to celebrate in the future. If Disney sticks to the 18 month timeline, that would take the celebration until March 31, 2023.
    • Changes coming to EPCOT
      • Main Entrance changes
        • The music — it’s uplifting, it’s energizing, it reminds me in some ways of the incredible music you find in attractions like Soarin’, like it’s taking you into areas you never thought of. It makes the blood flow. You can listen to it over on YouTube: NEW EPCOT Entrance Area Loop (2021 – Present) – YouTube
        • The Light Ribbon — incredible! More information from Imagineering: “At more than four football fields long, this light ribbon has been present since opening day, but was originally lit by hundreds of fluorescent tubes in solid colors. Now we’ve updated it with highly energy-efficient, programmable LED lighting with nearly 3,000 individually controlled points of light that blend together to create color gradients and patterns.”
        • The new flagpoles — twelve flagpoles to reflect both the origins of Epcot and what is believed to be the future of Epcot as the new Neighborhoods come into play.
        • And don’t forget about the new fountain! We touched on that previously, but wow what a fountain!
      • The Four Neighborhoods
        • World Showcase
          • Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure
          • HarmoniUS Fireworks Show
        • World Discovery
          • The Epcot of Tomorrow at the Odyssey Events Pavilion
        • World Celebration
          • Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind
        • World Nature
          • Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana
    • Changes coming to the Magic Kingdom
      • Interestingly enough, the only brand new attraction coming to the Magic Kingdom is the TRON Roller Coaster, and that isn’t going to be open in time for the 50th Anniversary. It looks like that will be open sometime in 2022.
      • As far as attractions are concerned, there aren’t a lot of changes; what we are seeing is Disney’s attention to detail. Things like the new paint colors to reflect the 50th anniversary color scheme, refreshing of attractions with new paint and other touches, and things like that.
      • The Hall of Presidents is being updated for the new president.
      • The Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover is still being worked on — it shows unavailable through May 4, 2021.
      • The Walt Disney World Railroad is currently closed because of the work being done for the TRON Roller Coaster. We have no idea on when it might be able to open up, but at this point I’m guessing it will be when TRON opens.
    • Changes coming to the rest of Walt Disney World
      • Hollywood Studios
      • Animal Kingdom
      • Lastly, Brenda shares her vision for the celebration on October 1 and beyond if she was the planner, weird as it may be.
  • This Day in Disney History for March 8
    • Birthday for Bruce Broughton, born on this day in 1945
  • Disney Who’s Who Character:
    • Bagheera from The Jungle Book
  • Walt Disney Quote
    • “Our heritage and ideals, our code and standards – the things we live by and teach our children – are preserved or diminished by how freely we exchange ideas and feelings.” -Walt Disney
