Feature Topic: The Golden Age of Disney Feature Films!
- Mike: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
  - Release date: December 21, 1937, February 4, 1938 (Wide Release)
  - Snow White was the first full-length cell-animated feature film and Disney’s first animated feature. This film established Walt Disney as a major film producer!
  - Producer: Walt Disney
  - Notable Disney Legends that worked on the film:
    - Les Clark
    - Marc Davis
    - Eric Larson
    - John Lounsbery
    - Woolie Reitherman
    - Art Babbitt
    - Ham Luske
    - Norm Ferguson
    - Wilfred Jackson
  - Quote:
    - Seven Dwarfs, Seven Personalities
    - When Walt proposed a full-length motion picture based on Grimm’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, he knew that the key to a compelling story was believable, sympathetic characters. “The seven dwarfs were naturals for the medium.” Walt explained. “In them, we could instill boundless humor, not only as to their physical appearances, but in their mannerisms, personalities, voices and actions.”
  - Sophie’s Input: Goddess of Spring (1934)
    - This 9-minute short was an integral part of the development of Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs, acting as practice for the Animators in the rotoscoping technique and drawing realistically-proportioned figures.
- Brenda: Pinocchio (1940)
  - Release Date: February 7, 1940
  - Nine Old Men: Ollie Johnston (animator) Frank Thomas (animation director)
  - Brenda’s Input: Multiplane Camera
    - Using multiple cell frames to create the illusion of depth in a 2-D space
- Sophie: Fantasia (1940)
  - Release Date: November 13, 1940
  - Disney’s third film was originally intended only to be an elaborate Silly Symphony short film, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, centered around Mickey Mouse (who had declined in popularity at the time) Walt realized the potential profits didn’t match with the cost of the short, which was already nearing completion, so he settled on the concept of animating various scenes to classical music to elongate the film’s running time to that of a feature-length production.
  - Development of Fantasound – with the help of Leopold Stokowski
Sophie’s Question of the Week:
- What is your favorite Disney movie?
  - Mike: Mary Poppins
  - Brenda: Ratatouille
  - Sophie: Fantasia
This Day in Disney History for 7/21/2025:
- 1939: Walt Disney releases the Mickey Mouse short “The Pointer.”
Stump the Soph!
- Spot – The Good Dinosaur
A little bit of Walt
- “This is tough, trying to explain Mickey. It’s been done by experts and the best any of us have been able to come up with is the fact that Mickey is so simple and uncomplicated, so easy to understand, that you can’t help liking him.” – Walt Disney (during New York Times magazine interview with Walt on Mickey’s 25th birthday)
